C & O Canal

My husband and I went on a bike trip on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. This image was painted from reference photos and memories of that trip. The shelf on the edge was where the mule and driver walked while pulling the barge through the water. The canal is preserved as a National Historical Park that passes through Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington DC. It was started in 1828 and runs for 184.5 miles.
